Our approach to phonics is systematic and rigorous and is broadly inline with 'Letters and Sounds.'
Lessons are structured in a way that helps children to get the most out of each session. We follow the structure: revisit, teach, practise, apply.
During these sessions, from Reception, children will be taught phoneme/ grapheme correspondence in a sequence, which you will find below. This sequence is adapted to your child's needs if necessary.
Once your child has a sound understanding of phoneme/grapheme correspondence and a concept of what a word is, they will be taught non-words in line with the graphemes they are being taught. Non- words are basically nonsense words, which enable us to observe children applying their phonic skills beyond any context clues they may get from reading real words. We do not teach the children to spell non-words.
