Intent: What we want to achieve through Maths teaching
At Laceyfields, we want our children to enjoy Maths and understand how it is used in the real world from everyday money management and measuring to careers in different sciences and technologies. We want our children to see patterns and make connections with what they already know. A strong sense of basic number skills will be fostered through a range of strategies which will develop fluency and provide opportunities for children to work collaboratively to deepen their understanding and to be able to confidently give reasons for their thinking.
Implementation – How we do it here
At Laceyfields, our children are taught through whole-class interactive teaching, where the focus is on all pupils working together on the same lesson content at the same time to ensure that all can master concepts before moving to the next part of the teaching sequence, allowing no pupil to be left behind. We plan using a concrete, pictorial, abstract approach and children use a range of manipulatives so that they can understand the value of numbers before moving onto more complex operations and methods. Children create and use numbers in different representations and give reasons for calculations they have made and problems they have solved.
Impact: How we will see effective Maths teaching
Our children will be ready for the next stage in their education by being able to Use a range of manipulatives to explore number and make calculations recall number facts fluently. They will select efficient methods and give reasons for their thinking orally and progressing to writing. They will make connections using prior knowledge to access new learning.
